Azerbaijan can cut transport CO₂ by 600,000 tonnes, ADB says
Azerbaijan could reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from its transport sector by 600,000 tonnes by 2030, generating an estimated economic benefit of about $18 million, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The bank said the target could be achieved by deploying 3,000 electric buses by 2030, electrifying 1% of the country's truck fleet and 5% of its passenger vehicle fleet, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
As of 2021, Azerbaijan had more than 1.3 million registered passenger cars and over 160,000 trucks.
It also notes that Azerbaijan Railways is implementing decarbonization measures, including railway electrification, the development of a decarbonization strategy, and the establishment of a carbon trading unit with ADB support.
The largest reduction in emissions will come not only from railway electrification but also from shifting passenger and freight transport from roads to rail, the bank added.
