Azerbaijan continues probe into water contamination by Armenia
Head of the Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office Department Elnur Musayev has said that investigations into the pollution of Azerbaijan's water resources by Armenia are ongoing.
Musayev made these remarks at a scientific and practical conference on "Environmental Water Violations Contributing to Climate Change", Caliber.Az reports.
The conference is part of the ECOLEAD project "Strengthening the Environment: The Role of Enlightenment and Law Enforcement Measures" held at the International School of Nakhchivan State University.
“To halt illegal operations by enterprises in Armenia, we have sent requests to international organisations and foreign environmental monitoring agencies, collected water samples, and are assessing the extent of the pollution,” he added. “The gathered materials will be legally evaluated.”
The Araz River, originating in Türkiye’s Bingol Mountains and traversing through the borders of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Armenia before merging with the Kura River and flowing into the Caspian Sea, plays a significant role in sustaining the natural ecosystem of the South Caucasus.
The river directly impacts the health of 20 million people, most of them in rural and urban settlements in the provinces of west and east Azerbaijan, Ardabil, and Gilan in Iran, as well as some habitations in the southern regions of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
