Azerbaijan detains suspected Iranian agents plotting armed riots OFFICIAL/VIDEO/UPDATED

Employees of Azerbaijan's Interior Ministry, State Security Service and the Prosecutor General's Office have conducted joint special comprehensive measures to suppress crimes that were planned to be carried out by people recruited by Iran's special services for money and as a result of religious propaganda.

This is stated in a joint statement of these state structures, Caliber.Az reports.

It was established that Rufulla Akhundzada and Bakhtiyar Bayramov, who live in Iran and work with Iranian special services, attracted Tartar district resident Arif Jumshudov and instructed him to form a "resistance group" to incite armed riots on Azerbaijani territory, forcibly change the country's constitutional system, and establish a state governed by Sharia law.

He organised regular secret meetings in his house and brought the instructions of Rufulla Akhundzada and Bakhtiyar Bayramov to the above-mentioned persons. In turn, the members of the group tried to attract new people to cooperation and informed Akhundzada about it.

In addition, Akhundzada attracted Baku resident Anar Isayev to cooperation and also instructed him to create a "resistance group" to create armed riots on the territory of Azerbaijan, forcibly change the constitutional system of the country and create a Karimah (“generous” in Arabic) theocratic state governed by Sharia law. In return, he promised large sums of money, weapons and comprehensive support, and also introduced Isaev to Jumshudov for coordination and joint activities.

These individuals positioned themselves in society as believers, propagandised religious radicalism and Iran in social networks and crowded places and carried out orders received from abroad about violating the traditions of religious tolerance in Azerbaijan.

In addition, members of the group organised the sale of drugs purposefully supplied by Iran and the large sums of money received was spent on the propaganda of religious radicalism in Azerbaijan and other subversive activities.

Operational search and investigative measures are continuing.
