Israel’s Independence Day, known as Yom HaAtzmaut, marks the proclamation of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, when David Ben-Gurion formally announced the establishment of the state at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine.
It is celebrated every year on the 5th of Iyar according to the Hebrew calendar and serves as Israel’s national day, featuring official ceremonies, public festivities, and cultural events across the country.
The holiday is closely connected to Israel’s transition from a mandate territory to an independent state, following the 1947 UN Partition Plan, which provided the international framework for statehood. It is traditionally observed immediately after Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day), symbolically shifting the national mood from remembrance to celebration.
