Azerbaijan focuses on mountain ecosystem challenges as COP29 chair, says minister

13 November 2024 15:53

On November 13, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the critical need for targeted solutions to address climate challenges facing mountain ecosystems.

As the current chair of COP29, Azerbaijan is committed to bringing attention to these pressing issues, he said, according to Caliber.Az.

Minister Bayramov made these remarks during his participation in a high-level dialogue titled “Advancing the Mountain Agenda: Common Trends and Climate Change,” held at the World Leaders Summit on Climate Action, as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Bayramov underscored the significance of mountain regions, both for their rich natural resources and their role in preserving ecosystems and biodiversity.

He highlighted that natural disasters, such as the melting of glaciers leading to floods and landslides, require systematic measures to mitigate their impact.

The minister also stressed the importance of the UN’s voluntary alliance, the “Mountain Partnership,” which plays a key role in raising public awareness and mobilizing resources to address the unique challenges faced by mountainous areas.
