Azerbaijan leads regional green energy push with key MoU signing in Baku

04 April 2025 15:44

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria have reached a significant milestone in their energy collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on green energy transmission.

The agreement was finalized during the 2nd ministerial meeting on the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria Green Energy Corridor project, held on April 4 in Baku, Caliber.Az reports.

The meeting was attended by key energy officials, including Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Vakhtang Tsintsadze, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, and Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov.

The officials discussed the critical importance of developing an inter-regional green energy infrastructure to bolster energy security and facilitate the transportation of Azerbaijan's renewable energy resources to broader markets.

The MoU signed during the meeting outlines a framework for increased cooperation in green energy transmission, with a specific focus on enhancing the potential for energy trade and transmission across the four countries. The agreement includes provisions for joint investment projects, the development of energy supply infrastructure, and cooperation in the integration of the region into the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).

Minister Shahbazov emphasized the strategic importance of the Green Energy Corridor as a key initiative to support the energy transition in the region while strengthening energy security. He noted that this collaborative effort would not only contribute to the sustainable development of the participating nations but also play a pivotal role in achieving broader European and global energy goals.

The Southern Gas Corridor, a pipeline network delivering Caspian gas to Europe, runs from Azerbaijan through Georgia and Türkiye to Greece.
