Azerbaijan marks 107th anniversary of  Baku’s liberation End of Armenian-Bolshevik occupation

15 September 2025 00:34

September 15 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Baku from occupation by Armenian-Bolshevik forces.

As Caliber.Az reminds, 107 years have passed since the capital of Azerbaijan was freed.

On 15 September 1918, Azerbaijani and Turkish soldiers, having liberated Baku from the Bolshevik-Dashnak junta, wrote a glorious page in the history of our country.

This event marked the end of Armenian and Bolshevik domination in Baku and its surrounding areas, solidifying Azerbaijan’s status as an independent state.

The liberation of Baku from Armenian-Bolshevik occupation is one of the most glorious chapters in 20th-century Azerbaijani history.

Despite Azerbaijan proclaiming independence in May 1918, parts of the country, including Baku and its surrounding regions, remained under occupation. Without regaining control of these territories, the country’s independence could hardly be realised.

The young Azerbaijani state, newly independent, lacked the capacity to fully secure its territorial integrity. In the midst of complex political circumstances, the Ottoman Empire sent troops to Azerbaijan under the command of Nuru Pasha to help safeguard the territorial integrity of the brotherly Azerbaijani nation. Despite protests from European powers over the arrival of Turkish forces in Azerbaijan, the Ottoman Empire honourably fulfilled its historic duty in August–September 1918.

On 15 September, the Caucasian Islamic Army and the Azerbaijani Corps liberated Baku from the occupiers. Following this historic event, the capital of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was moved from Ganja to Baku.
