Azerbaijan marks earthquake anniversary, reinforces solidarity with Türkiye
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs marked the third anniversary of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake in Türkiye, expressing condolences to the victims and reaffirming solidarity with the Turkish people.
“On the anniversary of the devastating earthquake in the Kahramanmaraş region of our brotherly Türkiye, we once again remember with deep sorrow this tragedy that claimed thousands of lives and caused massive destruction. We honour the memory of the victims with profound grief. The Azerbaijani state and people have always stood by Türkiye and share this pain as their own. We wish the brotherly Turkish state and people well-being, prosperity, and peace,” the ministry wrote, as reported by Caliber.Az.
The Kahramanmaraş earthquakes on February 6, 2023, were a catastrophic seismic doublet, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5, striking southern Türkiye and northern Syria and causing massive destruction across at least 11 provinces.
The disaster resulted in over 50,000 deaths — more than 44,000 in Türkiye and nearly 6,000 in Syria — along with tens of thousands of injuries and widespread displacement.
The earthquakes ruptured a large section of the East Anatolian Fault Zone, triggering landslides, infrastructure collapse, and severe damage in cities including Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, and Kahramanmaraş.
In response, dozens of countries provided humanitarian aid, rescue teams, and medical supplies, while recovery and reconstruction efforts continue years later.
