Azerbaijan-NATO talks focus on peacekeeping contributions, European energy security
On February 6, 2025, Jafar Huseynzadeh, Azerbaijan's representative to NATO, met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska to discuss key areas of collaboration between Azerbaijan and NATO.
Huseynzadeh shared insights about the meeting on his social media account (X), per Caliber.Az.
During the productive discussions, the two officials focused on Azerbaijan’s contributions to NATO-led peacekeeping operations, its involvement in the Partnership for Peace Program, and its significant role in enhancing energy security across Europe.
They also touched on the importance of Azerbaijan’s transportation infrastructure and ongoing developments in the region.
Azerbaijan’s engagement with NATO began in 1992 when it joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, which was later succeeded by the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997.
Azerbaijan officially became part of the Partnership for Peace (PfP) program in 1994, marking the beginning of its active bilateral cooperation with NATO. Since then, Azerbaijan has made notable contributions to Euro-Atlantic security, particularly through its participation in NATO-led peacekeeping operations.
The framework for cooperation is further guided by Azerbaijan’s Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), which outlines the country’s commitments to security, reforms, and political dialogue with NATO.
In addition to security matters, NATO has consistently supported Azerbaijan's efforts to foster peaceful relations with Armenia and achieve a long-term peace agreement.
