Azerbaijan offers support to Brazil’s youth-led climate efforts for COP30

17 June 2025 10:25

On June 16, during the UN Climate Change June sessions in Bonn — specifically the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (SB62) — a meeting took place between Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Special Representative of the President on Climate Issues and President of COP29, and Leyla Hasanova, COP29’s Youth Climate Leader, with COP30 Youth Climate Leader Marcele Oliveira and her team.

The discussion centred on Brazil’s preparations for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), set to be held in Belém this November.

Mukhtar Babayev underscored the importance of building effective collaboration with youth organisations within the COP process and highlighted the need for active youth involvement at both national and international levels, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

"With less than 150 days remaining before the start of COP30, the role of young people on this climate platform is becoming increasingly crucial," Babayev said. "Youth act as a kind of bridge between the parties, leaders, children, and their peers. Moreover, it is extremely important to develop a media strategy for COP30. Climate education must not be limited to the environmental field alone, but must be widespread, especially among children and young people. To achieve this, powerful communication and information resources must be mobilised," he added.

Leyla Hasanova also emphasised that youth engagement in climate action is of critical significance. She pointed to the success of the COP29 Climate Summer Camp hosted in Azerbaijan last year, noting that 75 young educators from 35 countries had participated in training sessions focused on climate science. According to her, such initiatives help to create opportunities for greater youth involvement in climate-related processes.

The COP29 Youth Climate Leader reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s readiness to cooperate with Brazil in the lead-up to COP30 and proposed a partnership to jointly organise the next climate summer camp.

In her address, Marcele Oliveira, Brazil’s COP30 Youth Climate Leader, highlighted the importance of the Mutirão initiative, which is designed to encourage collaborative efforts between youth and local communities.

"Our main goal is to establish direct engagement not only with high-ranking decision-makers, but also with rural populations and young people living in the Amazon rainforest," she stated.

She added that hosting COP30 in Belém — a city located in the heart of the Amazon — lends even greater significance to the process.

At the conclusion of the meeting, all sides agreed to work on a joint action plan for the run-up to COP30, including the organisation of regional consultations and strengthening youth platforms.

In closing, Marcele Oliveira expressed her gratitude to the COP29 Presidency for its support and the valuable guidance provided.

As a reminder, COP30 is scheduled to take place in November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.
