Azerbaijan organises Eid al-Adha charity campaign in Syria, aiding 1,500 war-affected families
Azerbaijan has conducted another charity campaign in Syria, providing much-needed support to families affected by the country’s prolonged civil war, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has stated.
Timed to coincide with the holy festival of Eid al-Adha (Gurban Bayram), the campaign was held on June 7–8 in the suburbs of Damascus and in Homs province — regions that have suffered extensive destruction during the conflict, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The effort was organised under the slogan “The sincerest greetings to the brotherly Syrian people from the people of Azerbaijan.”
The event was initiated and coordinated by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Syria, with support from the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA). Meat from sacrificial animals was distributed to 320 war-affected families. The initiative also involved the Syrian Hayat Foundation and volunteer groups Sawaed Al-Ihsan (“Kind Hands”) and Basmat Hayat (“Smile of Life”).
The campaign reached families of Arab, Turkmen, Circassian, and Alawite backgrounds. On the first day, aid was distributed in the Western and Eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus; on the second day, the effort moved to Homs and nearby areas. Many of the recipient households were headed by women raising multiple children after losing their husbands in the war. In total, around 1,500 individuals benefited from the two-day aid campaign.
Families expressed deep appreciation to the Azerbaijani people and government, extending their warmest wishes in return.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the initiative is part of a broader humanitarian strategy directed by President Ilham Aliyev, with further activities planned.
For the record, at the end of last year, Azerbaijan delivered 200 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria. In addition, from March 25–27 this year, the Azerbaijani Embassy and AIDA organised iftar meals in Damascus for 1,000 orphaned children.
