Azerbaijan plans 1.6 GW of green energy in Karabakh, East Zangezur by 2030
By 2030, 1.6 gigawatts of “green” energy are planned to be produced in Karabakh and East Zangezur, Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Orkhan Zeynalov announced during the 1st Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF’25).
The deputy minister noted that the solar and wind generation potential in Karabakh is estimated at 10 gigawatts, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“A quarter of Azerbaijan’s water resources also originate in these regions. By 2030, it is planned to generate 1.6 gigawatts of electricity in Karabakh and East Zangazur, which will allow production of twice as much energy as the region itself requires. The surplus can be exported via the Jabrayil Energy Hub to Nakhchivan, Türkiye, and other regions,” Zeynalov said.
He also noted that an assessment of Nakhchivan’s green energy potential is currently underway.
“BCG US recently completed a feasibility study: the technical potential is estimated at 25 gigawatts, while the economic potential is around 6–7 gigawatts. The project plans include the creation of electricity generation capacity in Nakhchivan, and the second component involves establishing an interconnected line to Türkiye, enabling direct exports from Nakhchivan to Türkiye. This route can be further strengthened via the main Azerbaijan–Jabrayil Energy Hub, passing through Armenia, Nakhchivan, and then to Türkiye,” the deputy minister added.
