Azerbaijan’s demands to Armenia remain unchanged, think tank chief says
The results of recent parliamentary elections in Armenia indicate the country’s desire to continue the peace process, while Azerbaijan’s fair demands and expectations remain unchanged, Farid Shafiyev, Chairman of the Board of the Centre of Analysis of International Relations, said.
At an event titled “New Geopolitical Realities in the South Caucasus: Azerbaijan and the Peace Agenda,” he noted that certain trends have emerged in Western media following Armenia’s elections, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“It is noted that Azerbaijan should abandon its demand related to the Constitution of Armenia. At least over the past five to six years, none of the advice given to Azerbaijan by the West has been useful for us. This point shows the correctness of the policy pursued by Azerbaijan,” he added.
Azerbaijan’s primary demand centres on Armenia amending its constitution to eliminate references perceived as territorial claims.
Specifically, Baku insists on removing the preamble’s citation of the 1990 Declaration of Independence, which references a 1989 unification statement involving the Karabakh region, viewing it as incompatible with full recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
