Azerbaijan's flag carrier AZAL strengthens ties with Central Asia through new route
Azerbaijan’s national carrier, AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines), is expanding its international route network with the launch of regular direct flights between Baku and Shymkent, a major city in southern Kazakhstan.
The new service is set to begin on Saturday, June 28, the airline’s press service told Caliber.Az.
As part of the summer schedule, flights on the Baku–Shymkent–Baku route will operate three times a week: departures from Baku to Shymkent on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with return flights from Shymkent on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
Shymkent, known for its ancient mausoleums, striking architectural landmarks, and verdant parks, is a growing destination for travellers seeking cultural and historical experiences in Central Asia.
Tickets for the new route are now available for purchase through AZAL’s official website (www.azal.az), the mobile application, as well as AZAL ticket offices and accredited travel agencies.
Founded in 1992, AZAL is headquartered in Baku and operates from its main hub at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The airline serves a wide range of destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the CIS, with both passenger and cargo services. Known for its modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, AZAL emphasises high safety standards and service quality and is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
AZAL also operates Buta Airways, its low-cost subsidiary, offering affordable travel options for regional routes.
The addition of Shymkent to AZAL’s growing list of destinations marks another step in strengthening Azerbaijan’s air connectivity with Central Asia.
