Azerbaijani FM meets UNEP chief, discusses climate cooperation PHOTO

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met with the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen, during which the sides exchanged views on cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNEP, the Foreign Ministry has stated.

It said the talks focused on environmental protection, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development, Caliber.Az reports.

Bayramov briefed Andersen on Azerbaijan’s contribution to global climate action, outcomes achieved under COP29, and the country’s initiatives in green energy transition and environmental protection.

Andersen praised Azerbaijan’s role in advancing the climate agenda and supporting multilateral environmental efforts.

The discussions also covered COP29 follow-up initiatives, climate financing, sustainable cities, waste management, water resources, and biodiversity conservation.

Both sides stressed the importance of expanding joint projects and practical cooperation between UNEP and Azerbaijan.

The minister also spoke about environmental damage in Azerbaijan during the period of occupation, including deforestation, illegal exploitation of natural resources, water pollution, and ecological disruption.

He noted that mine contamination continues to hinder reconstruction and development efforts.

Bayramov expressed concern over the declining level of the Caspian Sea, warning of its negative impact on regional ecosystems, biodiversity, coastal areas, and economic activity.

He stressed the importance of stronger regional and international cooperation and science-based approaches to address the issue.

The UNEP report titled Fluctuations in the Caspian Sea Level and Climate Change was also highlighted as a useful contribution.
