Azerbaijan's most earthquake-prone zone revealed
Gurban Yetirmishli, General Director of the Republican Seismological Service Center of ANAS named the regions of Azerbaijan with the highest seismic activity during the meeting "Contemporary seismo-geodynamic situation in Azerbaijan".
"According to the seismic activity map covering the period from the beginning of this year to March 7, the greatest seismic activity is observed in the Neftchala, Lankaran, and Astara zones," Yetirmishli said, according to Report.
Speaking about the capital, Yetirmishli said there are no fault lines in Baku.
According to him, fault lines run through the Caspian Sea.
He added that over 7,000 earthquakes were registered in Azerbaijan and adjacent territories in 2021 and about 3,000 last year: "In the period from the beginning of this year to March 7, the southern zone was the most seismically active."
Touching upon the intensity of earthquakes in Azerbaijan, he said that our country is located in the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt, 25-30, sometimes 50-60 earthquakes occur in Azerbaijan daily.
According to him, a few days ago 20 small tremors occurred in one area within an hour: "But no one felt it. For a seismogenic region, such earthquakes are inevitable. There is no possibility of a catastrophic, destructive earthquake in Azerbaijan in the coming days. There may be a perceptible earthquake, either a 5-point or a 4-point earthquake, but there is nothing to worry about".
