06 June 2026 15:37

Azerbaijan and Spain held their first-ever consular consultations in Madrid on June 5, marking a step forward in bilateral cooperation on consular affairs and citizen services.

The consultations brought together delegations from the foreign ministries of both countries. The Azerbaijani side was led by Emil Safarov, Head of the Consular Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Spanish delegation was headed by Carolina Álvarez, Director General for Spaniards Abroad and Consular Affairs at Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Caliber.Az reports via the Foreign Ministry

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the current state of consular relations and explored opportunities to expand cooperation. Discussions focused on the potential signing of new bilateral agreements and the continued digitalization of consular services to improve efficiency and accessibility for citizens.

Officials also exchanged views on measures to protect the rights and freedoms of Azerbaijani and Spanish citizens residing, working, or traveling in each other's countries.

The consultations further covered cooperation in justice, law enforcement, prosecution, migration management, education, and visa policy. Both sides discussed prospects for strengthening bilateral and multilateral collaboration in these areas.
