Azerbaijan strengthens role in global urban planning, says Malaysian minister
Azerbaijan is deepening its involvement in global urban planning initiatives, according to the Malaysian Minister of Housing and Local Government.
Speaking at the III National Urban Forum of Azerbaijan (NUFA3) in Khankendi, Nga Kor Ming, who is also President of the UN-Habitat Assembly for the 2025-2029 term, praised the country’s efforts to host national forums over the past two years, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on urbanisation.
Ng Kok Ming welcomed the forum’s focus this year on climate and environmental sustainability, noting Azerbaijan’s contribution to COP29.
Two major projects were launched during the event: sectoral action pathways for sustainable cities and a resilience coalition initiative.
The minister emphasised that these efforts reflect a shared commitment to integrating climate considerations into the “New City” agenda, making urban spaces safer and more liveable.
The III National Urban Forum of Azerbaijan (NUFA3) opened in Khankendi under the theme “Towards Climate-Resilient and Healthy Cities: Harnessing Regional Partnerships and Innovative Solutions.” Serving as a platform for sustainable urban development, the forum addresses key challenges such as housing accessibility, post-conflict and disaster recovery, green construction, inclusive governance, digital innovation, and nature-based solutions.
NUFA3 brings together national, regional, and local authorities, communities, academic institutions, the private sector, and other stakeholders to promote climate-resilient and healthy cities through integrated planning and multi-sector cooperation, aligned with global frameworks like the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This year, over 200 participants from 64 countries attend in Khankendi, with an additional 500 expected at the Baku session on October 17. The forum also serves as a preparatory stage for WUF13, fostering international collaboration and the exchange of best practices in urban development. The event concludes on October 17, 2025, in Baku.
