Azerbaijan, Switzerland discuss regional security, cooperation at OSCE Ministerial Council PHOTO

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Alexandre Fasel, State Secretary of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs have discussed bilateral and multilateral cooperation, focusing on regional security, the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and OSCE collaboration.

The meeting was held on December 5, 2024, during the 31st OSCE Ministerial Council in which the parties highlighted the potential for strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Switzerland, with a particular focus on the framework of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Caliber.Az report, citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

One of the central topics of the meeting was regional security, with both sides emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing pressing security concerns. The discussion included a broad review of the current security situation in the South Caucasus and Europe, reflecting the growing need for diplomatic engagement in the region.

Bayramov provided a detailed update on the post-conflict situation in the South Caucasus, particularly the ongoing normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. While progress has been made in negotiations toward a peace treaty, the continuation of Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan was acknowledged as a significant impediment to achieving long-lasting peace. Both sides underscored the importance of resolving such disputes through diplomatic means, with Bayramov emphasizing Azerbaijan’s commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution.

In addition to regional security and the peace process, discussions also focused on the broader role of the OSCE. Both officials expressed their intention to deepen cooperation within the organization, which plays a pivotal role in promoting stability, security, and cooperation across Europe and beyond. Minister Bayramov and State Secretary Fasel highlighted the potential for future collaboration on initiatives aimed at addressing global challenges, such as climate change and economic stability.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest, further underscoring the strong diplomatic ties between Azerbaijan and Switzerland. The two countries have a shared interest in promoting stability and fostering productive international dialogue, especially in light of recent developments in the South Caucasus.
