Azerbaijan to ease accommodation, eradicate language barriers for COP29 participants

07 October 2024 17:05

Azerbaijan will allow certain participants from developing countries attending the 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to forgo deposits for their accommodations.

This issue is scheduled for discussion in the upcoming plenary session of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) on October 8, 2024, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

This provision is included in the "Agreement on the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change" between the Government of Azerbaijan and the UN Climate Change Secretariat. The agreement also covers the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

The document stipulates that the Azerbaijani government will provide affordable housing options (including hotels and residential spaces) at reasonable prices for participants. It ensures that accommodation prices remain within typical market conditions to facilitate the participation of delegates from developing countries.

Moreover, participants from developing nations will be allowed to stay in accommodations even if they are unable to pay a deposit in advance.

During the COP29, which will be held in Azerbaijan in November 2024, events will be translated into six official UN languages. This is stipulated in a draft law on the "Approval of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change," as well as agreements related to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

The draft law is included in the agenda for the plenary session of the Milli Majlis, scheduled for October.

Special equipment and devices will be utilized during the session to facilitate operations in the six official UN languages: Chinese, Arabic, French, English, Spanish, and Russian.

COP29 will be a significant event for global climate discussions and is expected to draw attention to the efforts made by Azerbaijan in hosting such a vital international conference.
