Azerbaijan to take space science to new heights at Sydney astronautical congress
Azerbaijan's National Scientific Team will be actively involved in the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), set to take place in Sydney from September 29 to October 3.
This marks the fourth consecutive year of the team's participation in the prestigious event, further solidifying Azerbaijan's role in the global space community, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azercosmos.
The 2025 congress will focus on the theme "Sustainable Space: Resilient Earth", exploring the connection between space innovations and sustainability. Key discussions will center around three main topics: space applications for Earth, sustainable space activities, and maintaining life beyond our planet.
Scientific papers presented will cover a wide range of areas, including the role of space technology in finance, agriculture, urban planning, ICT, and other sectors, highlighting its potential for contributing to a digital, eco-friendly, and sustainable future.
The Azerbaijani team’s involvement in the IAC continues to showcase the country's growing contribution to space science. Recently, a ceremony was held to present certificates to the members of the National Scientific Team and to launch a mentoring program for the 2025 congress. The event was organized by Azercosmos Space Academy, in partnership with the SABAH group, the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, and the Innovation and Digital Development Agency of Azerbaijan. These efforts aim to further develop Azerbaijan’s space science and ecosystem.
The Azerbaijani team made significant strides in last year's International Astronautical Congress, held from October 14-18 under the theme Space Responsibility for Sustainability. Out of 345 papers submitted, 92 were accepted, with Azerbaijan placing among the top five countries, alongside the United States, Italy, India, and China. The 52 members of Azerbaijan’s team, who presented their research at the event in Milan, underscored the country's increasing prominence in space science.
The new mentoring program, introduced at the ceremony, is designed to open up opportunities for young professionals in the field, enabling them to share knowledge and experience with their international peers.
Notably, the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia, from September 29 to October 3, 2025. This event, organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and hosted by the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA), marks the third time Australia will host the IAC, following previous congresses in Melbourne (1998) and Adelaide (2017).
The congress will be held at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), located in the heart of the city. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore Sydney's iconic landmarks, such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, as well as its beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage.
