Azerbaijan, UN explore key climate, sustainable development initiatives PHOTO
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Ivana Živković, the UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Regional Director for Europe and the CIS, on November 14, on the margıns of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29)to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The sides discussed ongoing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as key issues related to Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of COP29, Caliber.Az reports.
Minister Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan's successful and mutually beneficial cooperation with UNDP, noting the implementation of joint projects aimed at promoting the sustainable development agenda. He also pointed to the establishment of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development as a key milestone in these efforts.
The FM briefed Živković in detail about Azerbaijan's efforts to combat the mine threat in territories liberated from occupation, as well as the country’s green energy development strategy. Bayramov emphasized the importance of regional and international cooperation on green energy projects and the active participation of international organizations like UNDP in promoting climate finance—one of the key priorities of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship at COP29.
Bayramov also highlighted significant outcomes from COP29, including the agreement on Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement and the increased commitments to climate finance from development banks, which saw funding rise from 75 to 170 billion dollars per year.
For her part, Ivana Živković praised the level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNDP, specifically emphasizing the importance of combating the mine threat. She noted that, in collaboration with Azerbaijan’s Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), efforts are underway to establish the International Centre of Excellence and Training for Mine Action in Azerbaijan.
