Azerbaijan, UN mull cooperation, upcoming COP29
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a working visit to Geneva to attend the first meeting of the Organizing Committee of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, has met with Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UN Geneva) Tatiana Valovaya.
The sides discussed the relations between the organization and Azerbaijan at the meeting held in the Azerbaijan Room at UN Geneva, Report informs.
Azerbaijan's close cooperation with the UN and its institutions was underlined at the meeting. The importance of the parliamentary dimension in addressing modern global challenges was emphasized.
The restoration of the Azerbaijan Room by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation was pointed out, and the multifaceted activity of the Foundation was praised. In particular, its active participation in UN projects was underlined.
The Milli Majlis Speaker also touched upon the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Baku this November. She underlined that holding of such an important international event by Azerbaijan is the result of recognition of country's efforts in combating climate change. The Speaker also highlighted the Parliamentary Conference to be held on the margins of this session under the joint organization of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Milli Majlis.
Tatiana Valovaya hailed hosting by Azerbaijan the upcoming COP29 and noted the importance of the country's achievements in the "green" energy sector.
The sides then exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
Following the meeting, the parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the Milli Majlis visited the Thoughts and Wishes Monument in the Ariana Park in front of the Palace of Nations housing the UN Office in Geneva on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s membership in the UN.
