Azerbaijan underscores mine threat to NATO Pursues strengthened demining cooperation
A delegation led by Samir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Mine Action Agency of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), briefed NATO officials in Brussels on the critical mine threat facing the country.
During a meeting with Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations Burcu San, the delegation outlined the extensive measures Azerbaijan is implementing to address this issue, ANAMA told Caliber.Az.
Poladov highlighted the humanitarian, economic, and environmental repercussions of landmines, reporting that since November 2020, mine explosions have resulted in 379 casualties among Azerbaijani citizens. He emphasized that the presence of mines obstructs the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes and hinders reconstruction efforts in affected areas.
The discussions also focused on potential collaboration in humanitarian demining and the introduction of new technologies to enhance these efforts, underscoring Azerbaijan's commitment to addressing the mine threat and fostering international cooperation in the region.
