Azerbaijan welcomes world leaders for COP29 Charles Michel, Alexander De Croo, Presidents of Finland and Montenegro arrive in Baku
World leaders are arriving in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, to participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This significant event brings together heads of state, policymakers, and experts to discuss global climate action, environmental resilience, and sustainable development.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, was among the dignitaries to arrive. Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense Industry, Vugar Mustafayev, and other officials warmly welcomed him at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Michel’s attendance underscores the European Union’s commitment to supporting international climate initiatives and collaborating with Azerbaijan on sustainability goals, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
Moreover, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo arrived in Baku. He was greeted by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Belgium, Vagif Sadigov, and other representatives, symbolizing the growing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Belgium.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović touched down in Baku, adding to the roster of high-profile attendees. Stubb, welcomed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Farid Gayibov, is anticipated to bring Finland’s expertise in green technology and its robust environmental policies to the discussions.
COP29 marks Azerbaijan’s first time hosting this prominent climate summit, reflecting its increasing role in international climate diplomacy. The Azerbaijani government has dedicated significant resources to ensure a productive and memorable experience for global leaders and experts, emphasizing the country's commitment to sustainable development.
As the summit progresses, leaders will address crucial topics such as reducing carbon emissions, financing climate resilience projects, and supporting developing countries in adopting clean energy solutions. The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) officially begins today, November 11, in Azerbaijan. The conference, which will run until November 22, is expected to be a landmark event in the global fight against climate change, drawing attention from around the world.
Azerbaijan was selected to host COP29 during the plenary session of COP28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023, due to the country's extensive experience in organizing high-profile international events. Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, will welcome approximately 70,000 international guests, including political leaders, environmental experts, and representatives from the private sector and civil society.
The opening day of COP29 will feature key events and ceremonies, marking the start of the climate discussions. One of the most anticipated parts of the conference is the High-Level Segment of the Climate Action Summit, which will take place on November 12-13. During this segment, around 80 heads of state and government from countries party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will address the audience, sharing their countries' commitments and strategies for addressing climate change.
World leaders' speeches will continue throughout November 13, setting the stage for further discussions on policies, solutions, and collaboration in the fight against climate change. COP29 is seen as a critical opportunity for nations to reaffirm their climate goals and strengthen international cooperation.
