Azerbaijani FM Bayramov calls for reforms in international institutions Photo
On March 13, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov participated in a panel discussion titled “Reimagining Multilateralism for a Multipolar World,” as part of the XII Global Baku Forum.
Bayramov addressed the causes and consequences of the weakening of multilateralism in the international relations system, as well as potential solutions to this issue, Caliber.Az reports, citing Foreign Ministry.
He noted that in the current global order, the selective application of international law norms and principles distances countries from collective decision-making. This, in turn, hampers efforts to curb new arms races and bloody conflicts, obstructs inclusive economic development, and impedes joint action against global threats such as climate change.
Bayramov emphasised that many international organisations were established after the Second World War based on the realities of that time, and it is now necessary to consider steps to restructure their activities in the current global context.
In discussing potential solutions, the Foreign Minister cited Azerbaijan's experience, which involves actively collaborating with partners while upholding mutual interests.
The Foreign Minister stressed that to restore trust, international institutions must operate with greater transparency, providing accountability and demonstrating a practical approach.
He also addressed issues that paralyse the work of multilateral platforms, such as the veto system and conflicting interests, calling for reforms and the application of regional three- or four-party formats on specific issues.
