The commemoration of the Greek Revolution of 1821, also known as Independence Day, occurs annually on March 25th in Greece, Cyprus, and Greek communities worldwide. This significant day, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation, holds the status of a public holiday in both Greece and Cyprus, marked by a variety of celebratory activities including parades and events.
The broader significance of Independence Day lies in its recognition of the successful Greek War of Independence (1821–1829), which aimed to liberate Greece from four centuries of Ottoman rule. Following nine years of conflict, Greece achieved recognition as an independent state through international agreements such as the London Protocol of 1830 and the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832.
Established as a national holiday by Royal Decree in 1838, Independence Day serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Greek people throughout their history.
