Azerbaijani NGOs to reveal digital map of Armenia’s environmental polluters PHOTO

06 February 2025 22:43

The Environmental Protection First coalition, a group of Azerbaijani NGOs opposing Armenia's mining industry for damaging the South Caucasus ecology, is set to unveil a digital map to the public.

This map, created from photographic and video images of major polluters, will soon be unveiled, said chairman of the "Azerbaijani Cartographers" Public Union, Mugabil Bayramov, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

He stated that work on the digital map has been underway for over a year. This resource will be available in Azerbaijani, English, and Armenian.

In 2024, the Environmental Protection First coalition also produced a map titled "Mineral and Raw Material Resources of the Republic of Armenia," which is available in Azerbaijani, English, and Armenian.

Emphasizing that last year's map serves as the foundation for the digital map, Bayramov stated: "Once again, we assert that Armenia, which does not adhere to environmental norms and standards, has no right to poison the entire region. Both the Armenian and international communities must be informed about what is being concealed. We will not leave this issue unresolved."

Bayramov further stressed that, the Environmental Protection First coalition is working closely with international partners.

"We raised these issues at the UN Civil Society Forum in Kenya last May, the UN Future Summit in New York last September, and COP29 in Baku. The map we prepared received great interest and was distributed to international experts," he noted.

Emphasizing the coalition's steadfast stance, Bayramov stated, "Armenia must ensure conditions are in place for Azerbaijani NGOs to carry out environmental monitoring at its mining operations in collaboration with international organizations. We question why Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has not yet addressed our request. As civil society organizations, we have formally submitted an open letter to Armenia on this issue."

It should be noted that the Environmental Protection First coalition is finalizing the digital map.
