Baku hosts conference on repression of ethnic minorities in India
An international conference titled “June 1984, the Amritsar Events: India’s Transnational Repression of Ethnic Minorities in the Context of Genocide” has opened in Baku, addressing what is described as the Indian government’s repressive policies toward ethnic minorities, with the event organised by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
The conference gathers representatives of Sikh communities from Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, and the United States, along with heads of think tanks, human rights and ethnic minority experts, as well as individuals identified as direct victims of India’s repressive, discriminatory, and persecutory policies, including members of the Dalit community, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Discussions are expected to centre on maintaining the issue of transnational repression and systematic persecution of ethnic and religious minorities—particularly Sikhs and Dalits—by the Indian government on the agenda of international organisations.
Participants will also discuss ways to strengthen cooperation among diaspora organisations affected by repression, develop joint legal protection mechanisms against transnational persecution, and promote coordinated action within international platforms.
