Baku Metro touts prime location of upcoming new station
The capital's metro network will undergo an impressive expansion of its reach in the following years, with over a dozen stations to be added to the current underground grid across multiple lines.
The first expansion will already become available to Baku residents by the end of this year, with a new metro stop to be opened near the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex on Tbilisi Avenue.
The Baku Metro agency has recently released a new promotional video highlighting the benefits of the future station, which is provisionally referred to as "B-4," as Caliber.Az reports
According to the clip, the station will serve a highly busy area where several major roads pass through, including Tbilisi Avenue, Bakikhanov Street, Academician Hasan Aliyev Street, Jeyhun Salimov Street, and Jalil Mammadguluzade Street.
The video was released in Azerbaijani language and displays the distances to various key sites around the metro station, shown in minutes.
Its location is expected to be particularly convenient for students and visitors of the city, as it will be in proximity to Azerbaijan's Medical University and the Medical Center No. 1 (commonly known as Semashko Hospital), as well as the Hyatt Regency Baku hotel. Other important fixtures in this area include the above-mentioned sports arena, the Japanese, Israeli, Russian and Turkish embassies, as well as several office buildings.
Construction of the B-4 station, which is part of the Purple Line, began in August 2021 but has faced repeated delays due to financial constraints. It was initially expected to open by the end of 2024, later postponed to 2025, and is now slated for completion in 2026.
The development plan for the capital's metro system envisions an extension of the line by several stations. At the moment, the Purple Line is made up of the following 4 stations: Khojasan, Avtovaghzal, Memar Ajami and 8 November.
Future plans include additional stations near the current Nizami metro station, near the current Sahil metro station, near Jeyhun Safarov Street (in proximity of Port Baku Residential and Office area), near the current Khatai metro station, as well as a station on Babek Avenue near the White City district.
