Baku to host international conference on combating neo-colonialism

22 August 2024 09:41

On August 22, the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) and the Bonaire Movement for Human Rights and Change will hold an international conference in Baku on the situation on the island of Bonaire, which is a colony of the Netherlands.

The conference entitled “The Path of Self-Determination of the Island of Bonaire through the UN General Assembly in Baku” will be attended by representatives of the anti-colonialist people of Bonaire, as well as officials from Belize, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Saint Lucia, Great Britain, Mexico, the Netherlands, the UN and other international and regional organisations, human rights activists, leaders of non-governmental organisations, experts and researchers on decolonisation issues, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

In addition, the conference will be attended by the Special Representative of the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Permanent Representative of Belize to the UN, a UNICEF Youth Envoy, the Youth Ambassador of the international organization "Association of Caribbean States" (Caribbean Community), the Chairperson of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples of Africa, and other high-ranking officials.

The conference will discuss the struggle of the people of Bonaire for liberation from Dutch colonial rule and the work being done to put the issue on the agenda of relevant international organisations. A few weeks after the event, a number of states are scheduled to submit a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly to reinscribe the island on the UN list of Territories subject to decolonisation.

Holding such an important event in Azerbaijan is a clear example that our country has become one of the world's centres in the fight against colonisation.
