Baku to host UN special rapporteur amid major judicial conference
From October 11 to 17, Baku will play host to the 67th General Assembly of the International Association of Judges (IAJ), a landmark event gathering approximately 300 judges, legal experts, and representatives from international organizations across 71 countries.
According to an official statement from the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, the event will be further distinguished by the presence of Margaret Satterthwaite, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Satterthwaite’s participation is set to bring significant gravitas to the international conference, which focuses on the critical interplay between judicial institutions and other branches of government. Her insights are expected to deepen the discourse on the essential role that courts play in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding judicial independence.
The International Association of Judges, of which the Union of Judges of Azerbaijan has been a member since 2009, continues to advance key initiatives aimed at promoting human rights and strengthening judicial autonomy worldwide. The upcoming General Assembly will also serve as a pivotal moment for the organization, featuring elections to its governing bodies and the appointment of a new chairperson.
