bp: Europe needs resilient energy supplies to withstand market volatility
Current capital investments by bp in Azerbaijan are focused on ensuring uninterrupted gas supplies to Europe for decades to come, the company’s Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye, Giovanni Cristofoli, said.
In a post summarising his participation at CERAWeek 2026, Cristofoli emphasised that diversification of supply sources has always been a core principle for bp, noting that Europe requires reliable, flexible, and market-resilient energy resources, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He highlighted the importance of combining the Southern Gas Corridor, bp’s global LNG portfolio, and alternative supply routes, stressing the strategic role of the Caspian region in providing stable pipeline gas and shielding European consumers from global price volatility.
Cristofoli said bp’s ongoing investments — including drilling new wells, large-scale upgrades to compressor facilities at the Shah Deniz field, and development of associated gas at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block — are designed to sustain these supplies over the long term.
He added that natural gas will remain a key component of Europe’s energy system in the foreseeable future, particularly for flexible power generation, heating, and industrial use. Against the backdrop of declining domestic production in Europe, diversified LNG and pipeline imports will become increasingly important, he noted.
Cristofoli also underscored bp’s commitment to supporting the transition to low-carbon energy, pointing to progress in reducing operational emissions and methane intensity through electrification, advanced flare monitoring, digital technologies, and carbon capture solutions. However, he stressed that technology alone is not sufficient, calling for clear regulatory frameworks and cross-industry cooperation.
According to him, CERAWeek 2026 once again demonstrated the importance of bringing together diverse perspectives, adding that both bp and the Caspian region play a vital role in strengthening Europe’s energy security while advancing toward a low-carbon future.
