Charles Michel: Modern world needs open dialogue and joint decision-making PHOTO

13 March 2025 10:09

The modern world, confronted with global challenges, requires a platform for open dialogue and joint decision-making, former President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel stated at the XII Global Baku Forum.

Speaking on the sidelines of the forum, Michel emphasized the increasing pressure on existing principles and international rules, highlighting the necessity of constructive solutions to address current crises, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“It is crucial that we have the opportunity to listen, discuss problems and find the best ways to make decisions. It is also an opportunity to prioritize, to get to know each other better—our history, cultural realities and traditions. I truly believe that international relations require wisdom, greater political will and public attention. And that is the challenge,” he stated.

In turn, Former Finnish President Tarja Halonen noted that the Global Baku Forum is attracting more and more attention against the background of global instability.

“Many participants have been gathering at this forum for many years. This time, I think, there is a record number of them. I think people have become more active as the global situation remains unpredictable. Therefore, as before, we strive to support this dialogue and continue such meetings,” Halonen said.

She also emphasized that Finland maintains good relations with all countries seeking cooperation and remains an active member of the UN.

The XII Global Baku Forum, organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre, is being held in Azerbaijan’s capital from March 13 to 15. As in previous years, the event has brought together presidents, prime ministers, ministers, parliamentarians, former heads of state and government, as well as representatives of international organizations. The theme of this year’s forum—“Rethinking the World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities”—reflects the urgency of addressing contemporary global challenges.

The Nizami Ganjavi International Centre was established following an order by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at a special meeting on September 30, 2012, in Ganja, the birthplace of the renowned Azerbaijani poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi. The meeting was held as part of celebrations marking the 870th anniversary of Nizami's birth.

Over time, the Centre has evolved into a significant international institution dedicated to addressing global issues and disseminating crucial information to the international community. The growing interest in the Centre's events highlights Azerbaijan’s increasing role in international diplomacy. The country’s ability to attract an expanding number of high-profile participants underscores the global confidence in Azerbaijan’s leadership, as well as support for President Ilham Aliyev’s policies.

This year’s forum is expected to welcome around 400 influential figures from across the globe, including at least 50 current and former presidents and prime ministers, heads of UN organizations, Nobel Prize laureates, scientists, and experts. Discussions will cover pressing international issues such as multilateral diplomacy, a multipolar world order, post-conflict reconstruction, and the evolving role of middle powers in global governance.

Panel discussions will explore topics such as “Geopolitical Change: Responsible Partnership vs. Competition,” “Revisiting Multilateralism for a Multipolar World,” and “The UN Pact for the Future: Building a New Global Consensus.” Additionally, the prestigious Nizami Ganjavi International Prize for 2025 will be awarded to a distinguished public figure for their contributions to peace and harmony.

The forum will also feature sessions on “The Road to Peace,” “Middle Powers in the New World Order,” and “Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Regional Stability.” Afternoon discussions will focus on key geopolitical regions, including the Middle East and Ukraine’s relations with the European Union.

By bringing together world leaders and policymakers, the XII Global Baku Forum serves as a crucial platform for shaping the future of global governance, fostering dialogue, and seeking solutions to pressing international challenges.
