Chinese JA Solar to provide solar panels for Azerbaijan’s green energy projects
Chinese solar technology company JA Solar will supply one gigawatt (GW) of high-efficiency solar panels for two of Azerbaijan’s largest solar power plants, which are being built by Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy developer.
The solar farms—located in the Neftchala and Bilasuvar regions—will have a combined capacity of 760 megawatts (MW) and are expected to generate about 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year. This is enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 830 million tonnes annually, while saving around 380 million cubic meters of natural gas, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
JA Solar’s DeepBlue 4.0 Pro panels were chosen for the project because they perform well in coastal areas with tough weather conditions like high humidity, salty air, strong winds, and dust. The company says these panels are built to last and help deliver stable electricity over time while lowering energy costs.
“We are proud to contribute to this landmark project with our DeepBlue 4.0 Pro modules,” said Aiqing Yang, Executive President of JA Solar. “Masdar has long been a trusted partner, and we sincerely appreciate their continued confidence in our products and expertise. Together, we are committed to delivering reliable, high-efficiency solutions that promote a more sustainable future.”
Construction of the plants officially began on June 4, 2024, during Baku Energy Week. The Bilasuvar plant will have a capacity of 445 MW, and the Neftchala plant will produce 315 MW. Both are expected to be completed and operational by 2027. The total investment in the projects is estimated at $670 million.
Once up and running, the plants are expected to produce about 1.53 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year—helping Azerbaijan reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and support its shift toward renewable energy.
