Council of Europe’s chief: Azerbaijan-Armenia peace crucial for South Caucasus stability
Normalising relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia represents a crucial step toward stability in the South Caucasus, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset told Azerbaijani journalists in Copenhagen.
“Establishing peace in the South Caucasus is a truly important step achieved between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This step allows for calm and stability in the South Caucasus, and it is the only way to create positive prospects for the population of the entire region,” Berset said.
He noted that, in his role as Secretary General, he has visited all three countries of the South Caucasus.
“I am in regular contact with various parties in the South Caucasus, as this region is extremely important for the Council of Europe and for the entire European continent,” he added.
Berset also reflected on his recent meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York. “We are working together. The meeting in New York went well. It was an interesting meeting and exchange of information,” he said.
