Deputy FM: Azerbaijan concluded COP29 chairmanship at highest level
Azerbaijan has successfully completed its chairmanship of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29), Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister and Lead Negotiator for COP29, Yalchin Rafiyev, has said.
Speaking at the international conference “The Role of Universities in Green Energy and Sustainability” at ADA University, Rafiyev highlighted that Azerbaijan conducted COP29 at the highest level, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“We have successfully concluded our chairmanship, although work in some areas is still ongoing,” he emphasised.
Rafiyev also noted that Türkiye is expected to host a meeting with the Azerbaijani delegation to learn from Azerbaijan’s COP29 experience. He added that Türkiye’s upcoming chairmanship of COP31 will likely increase regional attention to environmental and ecological issues following Azerbaijan’s lead.
“We have extended our support to Türkiye in this regard. The Turkish side is interested, and a meeting with the Azerbaijani delegation is planned in the near future,” he said.
In November 2024, Azerbaijan hosted COP29 in Baku, marking a key moment on the global climate stage. The summit attracted over 72,000 participants from nearly 200 countries.
Under Azerbaijan’s presidency, the summit focused on two main priorities: setting a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance and finalising the rules for carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
COP29 concluded with a historic agreement in which developed nations pledged to mobilise at least $300 billion annually by 2035 to support developing countries, tripling the previous $100 billion target.
The conference also delivered progress on longstanding elements of the Paris Agreement, as Parties reached a decade-long consensus on carbon market mechanisms, giving fresh momentum to global emissions trading.
