Deputy minister foresees new era in Azerbaijani-UN relations as COP29 looms
Proceeding from the declaration of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" in Azerbaijan, and taking into account the organization of COP29 in the country in November this year, it is worth giving preference to environmental projects within the framework of the Framework Document.
Deputy Economy Minister Sahib Mammadov said this at a meeting of the Joint Steering Committee of the government and the UN on the implementation of the "Framework Document on Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development for 2021-2025 between the UN and Azerbaijan", Report says.
According to him, the organization of COP29 in Azerbaijan, where the most pressing world problems of mankind are discussed, confirms the country's position as a responsible partner in solving global problems and allows opening a new page in relations with the UN.
The deputy minister noted that at the moment initiatives are being implemented with international partners to create infrastructure related to "green" and sustainable cities, renewable energy sources, and the use of offshore wind energy.
"Climate finance will be one of the main topics of discussion at COP29," he emphasized.
Mammadov added that there are currently about 73 public or partially public climate funds in the world.
"Their activities are not coordinated efficiently. It is reported that in 2020, these funds paid a total of 3-4bn dollars for various projects and programs".
In a similar vein, the same event heard that Azerbaijan and the United Nations (UN) will sign a new framework document on cooperation.
This was announced at a meeting of the Joint Steering Committee of the government and the UN on the implementation of the "Framework Document on Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development between the UN and Azerbaijan for 2021-2025", Report adds.
A roadmap of the new document covering 2026-2030 was also presented at the event.
