Diplomat: Russia vows to strengthen ties with Iran, resolve nuclear issue diplomatically
Press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has said that the Russian Federation is committed to strengthening its mutually beneficial relationship with Iran.
Peskov made these remarks during a press briefing, adding that Russia is ready to do everything possible to resolve the nuclear issue through diplomatic means, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He clarified that a separate discussion on the Iranian nuclear issue is expected, with proposals in place to make it a distinct topic for future consultations and Russia’s position that the nuclear issue must be tackled through peaceful, diplomatic channels.
Peskov also reaffirmed that, as a close ally and partner of Iran, Russia is fully committed to supporting the resolution of the matter.
"Iran is our ally and partner, with whom we are building comprehensive, mutually beneficial, and respectful relations. Russia is ready to do everything in its power to assist in resolving this issue. The US is aware of our position," said Peskov.
On February 4, US President Donald Trump signed an order reintroducing maximum pressure on Iran, though he also expressed hope that Washington would not need to rely on this strategy excessively. In response to the US action, Peskov reaffirmed Russia's belief in the importance of initiating negotiations between the US and Iran. He further emphasised that Russia is willing to contribute to improving relations between the two countries.
Aide to the president of the Russian Federation Yury Ushakov later confirmed that both Russia and the US have agreed to engage in talks regarding the Iranian nuclear issue. In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, underscored the increasing demand for consultations between Moscow and Tehran on international matters.
