Envoy: Russia, Armenia discuss “Trump Route” at highest levels
Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin has said that relations between Russia and Armenia are becoming “more mature,” but advancing them requires effort from both sides.
Kopyrkin emphasised that while ties are evolving, challenges remain, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“This does not mean that all problems are solved, or that there are no disagreements or misunderstandings. These concern very important national interests, including economic and social issues. Discussions are ongoing. This is normal. The main thing is that there must be movement from both sides. The current metaphor of a tango is apt — for a tango, two are needed,” he said.
The ambassador also highlighted the benefits Armenia gains from its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, noting that the country’s European prospects remain uncertain. He described EU accession as a complex process requiring significant effort and time, with some countries waiting decades to join. Accordingly, he suggested that EU membership is “more hypothetical” for Armenia at present.
Kopyrkin confirmed that the so-called “Trump route” through Syunik (Zangezur) is being discussed in the Russia-Armenia dialogue at the highest levels.
“This issue naturally comes up in dialogue at a high, top level. Armenian leadership has stated that this question is discussed only with the United States, but the topic is important and inevitably features in our discussions,” he said.
He added that Moscow’s core position remains consistent: it supports any steps leading to genuine peace, regional stability, and prosperity. Regarding the specifics of the “Trump route,” Kopyrkin said Russia is awaiting further details on how it would function. “Let us first understand what this is in concrete terms,” he noted.
