Erdogan contemplates opening Armenia border amid peace prospects with Azerbaijan
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has suggested that Türkiye might consider opening its border with Armenia following a comprehensive peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan.
Erdogan made these remarks to reporters accompanying him upon his return from a NATO summit in the United States, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.
"Why not consider this issue? We have already conveyed our position to Pashinyan. Now, our priority is to strive for peace. We are hopeful that a lasting peace, which Türkiye wholeheartedly supports, will soon be achieved between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The opening of the Zangezur corridor represents the final step in this agreement. We wish for positive decisions on this path to be made promptly. Positive signals are currently emerging from the region, and we anticipate they will eventually lead to positive outcomes," Erdogan stated.
Regarding a question about discussions with Iran's new President Massoud Pezeshkian on the Zangezur Corridor, Erdogan clarified, "I only extended congratulations on his election victory. The Zangezur corridor is a strategic route that promises benefits for all, particularly Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iran. Once operational, this corridor and railway connection will facilitate easier transportation and connectivity between Iran and Azerbaijan."
