Erdogan expresses support for Trump after Washington shooting incident
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with US counterpart Donald Trump and expressed his support following a shooting incident in Washington.
Erdogan described the incident as a “heinous act against democracy and freedom of the press,” and said he was concerned about the events that took place during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Caliber.Az reports, citing Yeni Şafak.
He also wished a speedy recovery to a Secret Service officer who was injured in the shooting.
Further details of the phone call were not disclosed.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton banquet hall.
According to media reports, a 31-year-old man from California opened fire with a shotgun at a Secret Service agent outside the venue and was detained at the scene.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the attack may have been aimed at Donald Trump and members of his administration.
