EU commissioner: Azerbaijan-Armenia peace progress transforms region
The progress toward a peaceful settlement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is reshaping the South Caucasus, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos told Report.
According to Kos, who recently returned from a regional tour, for the first time in several generations there is an opportunity to reopen trade routes that have been closed for decades.
“Countries from Europe to the borders of China recognize the significance of this moment. They have all gathered here in Luxembourg today. This is a first,” the commissioner emphasized.
She noted that the EU aims to jointly build new infrastructure to increase freedom of movement, trade opportunities, and access to diverse energy and digital transmission routes — meaning greater independence for all states along the corridor.
“Our work is a contribution to peace. Practical cooperation, interconnected markets, and linked societies can strengthen long-term stability and prosperity in the South Caucasus,” Kos said.
She added that the meeting in Luxembourg is only the first step, to be followed by an investment forum with the United States in November.
