EU official: Azerbaijan, Armenia should implement tripartite agreements
"The European Union has always highlighted the need to implement all previous trilateral agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which sets the ground for ongoing discussions."
European Union (EU) Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar made the relevant statement on May 24, Report informs, citing foreign media.
“Human rights and security have been one of the main issues in the conflict since the beginning of the Karabakh conflict. We cannot achieve a comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict without addressing the issue of security,” he said.
Klaar noted that interstate relations are essential and need to be regulated, and the EU would support any agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia that would provide a long-term solution.
“Peace processes are usually accompanied by fears, emotions, assumptions, and misinterpretations. It's natural," he said, calling for reducing tensions and easing the rhetoric.
According to him, the EU always emphasizes the need to implement all past trilateral agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which make a basis for current discussions. Klaar is convinced that no one doubts the relevance of the trilateral agreements reached by Yerevan and Baku with Moscow in 2020 and 2021.
He said the EU, for its part, is interested in peace, stability and prosperity in the neighbourhood, and considers it important to participate in this process.
“However, our efforts to support the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are aimed only at ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus, and we are pleased to cooperate with any other participant for the same purpose,” he concluded.
