Ex European Council chief warns double standards are "poison" to international order
Former European Council President Charles Michel warned that double standards are “poison” for international law and the global system, urging the European Union to adopt a more decisive and strategic approach to global challenges.
Speaking at the 13th Global Baku Forum in Azerbaijan’s capital, Michel said that the application of double standards undermines international law and weakens the entire system of international relations. He argued that democratic principles are coming under near-daily attack and that the temptation to apply inconsistent standards in international politics is increasing both within the European Union and beyond, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
In this context, Michel said the EU must develop an alternative political strategy. While Europe has long spoken about principles and values, he said, the time has come to translate those commitments into concrete decisions.
The former European Council chief also stressed the need to boost the bloc’s competitiveness and economic growth, warning that excessive regulation and bureaucracy are hampering innovation across European countries. He added that it is becoming increasingly clear that the EU must take greater control of its policies in the areas of security and defence by building its own capacities.
Michel concluded by highlighting the importance of reliable international partnerships. He said the European Union should deepen engagement with different regions of the world to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on China and Russia.
