First Russian freight train reaches Tehran via Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan
The first Russian freight train has arrived at Iran’s Aprin dry port near Tehran.
The train carried 62 forty-foot containers loaded with paper, cellulose, and other paper products.
The cargo is destined for various regions in Iran as well as neighbouring Iraq, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
The train entered Iran through the Inche-Borun border crossing with Turkmenistan and reached the Iranian capital in 12 days. Officials described the event as an important milestone in strengthening trade cooperation between Moscow and Tehran and as the beginning of regular rail service connecting the two countries through Central Asia.
Morteza Jafari, Deputy Director General of the Iranian Railway Organisation, said that one container train from Russia is currently scheduled to arrive in Iran approximately every 10 days. He noted that efforts are underway to increase the frequency of these shipments.
Jafari added that Iran aims to position itself as a regional hub for exports, imports, and transit through enhanced coordination with neighbouring countries and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
