Georgia awards inaugural parliamentary medal to Azerbaijani top lawmaker
Georgia has awarded its newly established Parliamentary Medal of Honour to Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, recognizing her role in strengthening inter-parliamentary ties and bilateral cooperation. The award was presented during a meeting between parliamentary leaders on the sidelines of the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union session in Istanbul, where the two sides also discussed strategic energy projects and regional cooperation.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili shared details of the meeting with Gafarova on social media platform X, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“I was pleased to meet the Chairperson of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova. It was a particular honour for me to present her with the first Parliamentary Medal of Honour, recently established by the Parliament of Georgia. She has made a significant contribution to strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as to the development of friendship between our peoples,” he wrote.
Papuashvili noted that the award reflects Gafarova’s exceptional role in shaping a solid normative framework for relations between the two parliaments, as well as her personal contribution to the development of ties between parliamentary committees, friendship groups, and joint diplomatic activity.
“We welcomed active inter-parliamentary cooperation and reaffirmed our commitment to the strategic partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan. During the meeting, we also discussed the peace process in the region and emphasized the need to advance strategic energy projects,” he added.
