Georgia's rail cargo surges to highest level in 10 years
Georgia's railway network recorded its highest monthly freight volume in a decade in June, reflecting the impact of recent infrastructure upgrades and growing transit activity, the country's Ministry of Economy said.
Deputy Economy Minister Tamar Ioseliani said Georgian Railway transported 1,361,484 tons of cargo during the month, the highest monthly figure recorded in the past 10 years, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Ioseliani attributed the milestone to the continued modernization and development of the country's railway infrastructure, which has enhanced the network's operational capacity and efficiency.
"It should be noted that the results achieved by Georgian Railway over the past year are clearly evident. Among the most significant projects are the modernization of the mountain pass section, completed in December 2025, and the full restoration of operations on the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line, which has significantly strengthened the railway's role in the development of the Middle Corridor," she said.
The upgraded rail infrastructure and the reopening of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars route have reinforced Georgia's position as a key transit hub along the Middle Corridor, an increasingly important trade route linking Asia and Europe.
