Georgian FM says remarks by EU foreign policy chief regrettable
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili has described remarks by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas as regrettable.
Botchorishvili harshly criticised Kallas, who said the European Union would not support Georgia's government but would continue to support the Georgian people, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
"It is regrettable that the European Union's top diplomat openly states that she does not intend to cooperate with the government of Georgia, which was elected based on the democratic will of the Georgian people, while at the same time speaking about supporting those same people," Bochorishvili wrote on social media.
According to the Georgian foreign minister, genuine partnership must be based on dialogue and engagement rather than a refusal to cooperate.
"The foundation of a true partnership is dialogue, not distancing from relations. Georgia remains committed to cooperation with the European Union based on respect and mutual understanding, in line with the interests of our citizens and for the sake of our shared European future. However, we cannot remain silent when the democratic choice of the Georgian people is ignored. Democracy means respecting the decision of voters — not only when it is politically convenient," she stressed.
