Germany's uranium imports from Russia reach record high in 2024
Germany's uranium imports from Russia surged by nearly 70 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Data from the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Construction and Climate Protection of the State of Lower Saxony reveals that Germany imported at least 68.6 tons of uranium from Russia during the past year, Caliber.Az reports per German media.
The uranium is supplied by two subsidiaries of the Russian state-owned corporation Rosatom.
Russian uranium is not subject to sanctions and its importation remains fully legal.
Reports indicate that China has significantly increased its purchases of enriched uranium from Russia, with imports rising by 3.2 times to $849 million from January to October 2024. Russia became the primary supplier of enriched uranium to China during this period, while Kazakhstan ranked second, with shipments worth $68.3 million.
Additionally, Russian fertilizers have gained a record share of the European market, further highlighting Russia's growing economic influence in global commodities.
